My Fall Favorites
It FINALLY feels like fall in the CSRA! To celebrate, here are some of my favorite speech and language activities that you can do at home. I love these activities because they are so easy to tweak and work for so many ages and goals. Let’s get started!
My favorite book is “We’re Going on a Leaf Hunt” by Steve Metzger. The pictures are beautiful and I love the diversity of the children in the story. This book is great for working on L or F sounds, naming actions (or jump up and act them out) and colors. For older kids, have them retell the story.
What did they do first, second, third, etc. After the story, let’s go on our own hunt. Maybe we can look for words that have your speech sound in them (scarecrows anyone?). If our speech sounds are all good, maybe we look for certain shapes or colors. For older kids, print out a list (there are tons on Pinterest) and have them keep track of what has been found, and what is still missing. This is also a great way to work on vocabulary words that might not come up the rest of the year. After we’ve found our treasures, let’s sort them. How many ways can we sort these leaves? Size, color, shape?
When we’re ready for a board game, one of my favorites all year long, but especially in the fall, is the Sneaky Snacky Squirrel. This game makes targeting s-blends super easy. We can also work on colors, counting, and vocabulary (acorn, tree, squirrel, wind). It’s particularly great for our kids that need help with social skills, getting your acorn stollen by a friend is tough sometimes.
There’s so many other fall activities that I’m excited to share with my patients in therapy. Hopefully this will help you have some fall family fun time while still working on speech!
What things does your family like to do in the fall? Let me know in the comments and let’s talk about how speech can sneak in too!
